As electronic devices and components rapidly evolve toward miniaturization, thin-layering, hybrid integration, and surface mount technology (SMT), the demand for Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) continues to surge. Consequently, MLCCs are advancing toward thinner dielectrics, higher layer counts, smaller footprints, larger capacities, and superior reliability.

Conventional chip capacitors are highly susceptible to thermal shock and mechanical deformation stress during the SMT process. 1. Special Application: Soft Termination Series MLCC

Viiyong Technology has launched the Soft Termination Series MLCC (available in 0603 to 1210 inch sizes, 100nF to 10μF) specifically designed to resolve internal fractures caused by external mechanical stress.

Soft termination MLCCs are specialized chip capacitors featuring flexible connection terminals. By incorporating conductive, flexible materials into the terminal electrode design, these components provide a protective buffer for the capacitor body. This ensures that the MLCC maintains its quality and performance even when the assembly substrate undergoes bending or deformation. This design effectively mitigates the common mechanical stress fractures found in traditional capacitors, providing enhanced mechanical reliability and vibration resistance.

2. Product Structure of Soft Termination MLCCs

While standard MLCC terminal electrodes consist of a Copper (Cu) layer followed by Nickel (Ni) and Tin (Sn) plating, the soft termination MLCC utilizes a unique four-layer terminal electrode structure. This design inserts a resin layer after the initial copper layer, followed by the standard Ni and Sn plating.

By introducing a specialized epoxy resin electrode material, a conductive elastic layer is formed. This layer offers several key benefits:

Stress Absorption: It effectively absorbs external stress and reduces the transmission of stress from the PCB to the component.

Enhanced Reliability: It prevents damage caused by PCB board deformation resulting from environmental changes, such as vibration or temperature fluctuations, during assembly and operation.

Signal Integrity: It reduces mutual interference between components and prevents signal waveform distortion.

Transmission Performance: It improves the frequency characteristics and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the circuit.

3. Application Fields for Soft Termination MLCCs

Standard MLCCs possess poor bending resistance. During SMT, processes like wave or reflow soldering can cause PCB deformation, subjecting the MLCC to thermal shock and mechanical stress that lead to cracks.

The Soft Termination Series is the optimal solution for these stress-related fractures. Its high reliability, excellent mechanical stress resistance, and thermal shock characteristics make it ideal for circuits prone to high bending degrees or intense vibrations. Consequently, it is primarily used in high-safety and high-reliability circuit designs with stringent quality requirements.

Conventional MLCC vs. Flexible Terminal MLCC

Key application areas include:

Automotive Electronics: Widely used in electronic modules, Engine Control Units (ECUs), safety systems, and entertainment systems. Their primary roles include power filtering, signal processing, and ensuring circuit stability.

Industrial Control Equipment: These capacitors play a vital role in filtering and reducing output ripple voltage. By selecting appropriate capacitance and ESR values, they stabilize voltage and improve anti-interference capabilities in AC input filters by filtering out harmonics and stray signals.

Communication Equipment: Essential for wireless devices, networking equipment, and infrastructure. They are used for signal coupling, filtering, and terminal matching to ensure stable, high-quality signal transmission.

Mobile Electronics: Extensively applied in smartphones, computers, smartwatches, headphones, and Bluetooth speakers. They are utilized in power filtering, coupling, and as hold-up capacitors to ensure stable device operation.
